1. Board Member – Legal (Canadian Charity & Non-Profit Law)

About the Role

We are seeking a lawyer or legal professional with experience in Canadian charity or non-profit law to help guide Advent Aid International as it grows.

The successful candidate will provide strategic legal insight to the Board regarding governance, regulatory compliance, risk management, and best practices for Canadian registered charities, particularly those carrying out international charitable activities.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic legal guidance to the Board of Directors.

• Advise on governance policies and board best practices.

• Review bylaws, governance documents, and organizational policies.

• Help ensure compliance with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requirements applicable to registered charities.

• Identify legal risks and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies.

• Provide guidance regarding agreements with international partners, contractors, and service providers where appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

• Lawyer licensed in Canada or legal professional with relevant experience.

• Knowledge of Canadian charity law or non-profit governance.

• Experience with organizations operating internationally is considered an asset.

• Strong ethical judgment and commitment to good governance.

• Supportive of Advent Aid International's Christian mission.

2. Board Member – Finance & International Accounting

About the Role

We are seeking a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) or finance professional with experience in accounting, financial oversight, or international operations.

Experience with international payroll, cross-border taxation, foreign currency transactions, and financial compliance involving multiple jurisdictions would be particularly valuable as Advent Aid International develops and expands its international programs.

Responsibilities

• Provide financial oversight and strategic guidance.

• Review budgets, financial reports, and internal controls.

• Advise on financial policies and risk management.

• Assist in developing sustainable financial systems for international operations.

• Provide guidance regarding international payroll considerations, cross-border taxation, and financial reporting where appropriate.

• Support transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship of charitable resources.

Preferred Qualifications

• CPA designation or equivalent financial expertise.

• Experience with charities or non-profit organizations is an asset.

• Knowledge of international accounting, payroll, or cross-border taxation is highly desirable.

• Experience with audit, compliance, or financial governance is beneficial.

• Knowledgeable with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the Chart of Accounts for Nonprofits is an asset.

3. Board Member – Fundraising & Grant Development

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced fundraising professional who is passionate about building sustainable charitable programs through donor engagement, grant development, and strategic partnerships.

The successful candidate will help strengthen the organization's fundraising capacity by identifying grant opportunities, cultivating donor relationships, and supporting ethical fundraising initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Advise the Board on fundraising strategy and development of Grant Funding Pipeline.

• Identify grant opportunities from foundations, governments, corporations, and other funding organizations.

• Research and profile priority prospects across all relevant funder types, analysis of donor guidelines, funding opportunities, and grant calls;

• Assist in preparing competitive grant applications, drafting, editing, and formatting of concept notes, Expressions of Interest (EOIs), grant proposals, annexes, and full applications;

• Development of logframes, theories of change, workplans, and results frameworks;

• Preparation of budget narratives and ensuring consistency between technical and financial sections;

• Technical editing, proofreading, and finalization of submission packages;

• Help cultivate relationships with donors, churches, foundations, businesses, and community partners.

• Support fundraising campaigns and donor stewardship initiatives.

• Promote fundraising practices that reflect integrity, transparency, and compliance with CRA guidance.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in grant writing or fundraising.

• Experience working with charities or non-profit organizations.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Excellent relationship-building abilities.

• Strong knowledge of Private Foundations, Global Affairs Canada, EU Funding, Endowments, or Unrestricted funding models is a plus

• Superior proposal writing skills with the ability to synthesize complex content into compelling funding narratives

• Proficiency in fundraising software and donor management systems.

• Passion for humanitarian service and Christian mission work.

Any organization-funded travel will be undertaken solely to further the charity's purposes and will be conducted in accordance with applicable CRA requirements and Advent Aid International's governance policies.

Board Appointment and Term

Successful applicants will initially be appointed to the Board for a two-month mutual evaluation period. During this time, both the Board and the prospective director will have the opportunity to assess whether there is a strong fit in terms of the organization's mission, values, governance approach, and collaborative working relationship.

Following a successful evaluation, the director may be confirmed to serve the remainder of a three-year board term, in accordance with Advent Aid International's bylaws and governance policies.

Board members are expected to actively participate in meetings, contribute their professional expertise, uphold the highest standards of integrity and confidentiality, and work collaboratively in advancing the organization's charitable mission.

Baseline pre-requisites:

• Be at least 18 years old .

• Be legally capable of acting as a director.

• Not be an undischarged bankrupt.

 

Expected Time Commitment

• Attend regular Board meetings (primarily virtual).

• Prepare for meetings by reviewing board materials in advance.

• Participate in committees or working groups where appropriate.

• Provide strategic advice within your area of professional expertise.

• Contribute approximately 4–8 hours per month, with occasional additional involvement during major initiatives or strategic planning.
